I doubt that any Americans will be unaware or unreflective today,September 11th, of the anniversary of terrorist aircraft attacks on our country. The tragedy, now ten years in the past, had impact on all regardless of age, race, religion or political stripe.
Today, the country is engaged in memorials of all types and sizes. Every TV station, radio station, city, county, state and business is taking note of September 11th. The build up to today’s anniversary has been a bit “over the top” as it appears that each news network tries to outdo the other in it’s explicit and never-ending coverage. Can there be too much at a time like this? My initial impulse is to say “of course not.” To even think such a thing almost feels “UnAmerican.” But the psychologist side of my brain reminds me that too much of anything runs the risk of becoming counter-productive. Rather than being prompted to reflect, remember, and rededicate – there is the potential to become desensitized or overwhelmed to the point of becoming distant or detached. Focused and appropriate memorials work best.
Our focus on this site is with Travel and Photography. These two areas of endeavor were forever impacted, both directly and indirectly, as a result of 911. In future articles we’ll be taking a look at 911 fallout for photography and travel.
For today – take a moment to remember, reflect, and rededicate. September 11, 911, effected us all. Let it be a day that unites us – a reminder that we are all in this together. Let it be a day to be thankful for all that we have and enjoy – and a day to remember and commemorate those who were lost. But don’t overdose or dwell to the point that it becomes toxic. Remembering the past well is key to moving well into the future. The journey continues – the path lies ahead.
