            POWER UP!

Photography today is rather power hungry.  Gone are the days when you could load up a role of film and set out to shoot.  Now you have to make sure that your camera and various related devices are charged up and ready to go.  Forget to charge your stuff and you are out of luck.  Your spiffy and rather expensive Digital SLR is nothing more than a fancy door stop after the battery dies.

Trouble with all this charging up is that you need to have a way to plug in all those devices.  I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for some way to organize and localize my charging so that I know where my stuff is and that it is charged up and ready to go.  I finally found some help.  Recently I picked up one of these outlet converter units which combines USB & Electrical  Outlets offered by the folks at fastmac.  This thing is great, adding two USB ports to your standard electrical outlet.  Like magic – now you have 4 charging outlets in the space originally allowing only two.  I use the two USB ports  to charge up my iPad and iPhone, both of which I use all the time for photography purposes.  And you don’t need to use the Apple adapters which take up more room.  Plus, I still have the two remaining standard electrical outlets which I use to plug in my Nikon SLR’s rechargeable battery and the rechargeable batteries for my strobes!

Now I know where my stuff is and I know it is charged up and ready for action.  Installation was generally easy.  They say if you can replace an outlet you can install this item.  Of course, keep in mind that it is an electrical device so turn off power to the outlet before you install.  And for everyone, but especially you guys out there, – it’s really best to follow the instructions.  Fastmac reports that the outlet’s USB ports can “power any device that is capable of being charged via a 5V power adapter” without the need for the adapter.  This makes it compatible with iPod, iPhone, and iPad as well as multiple other devices.  I also use mine for my GPS, and smaller digital cameras and video cameras.  Check out pricing and ordering on our “Favorites Page
