Are you the type of traveler who is always on the lookout for your next travel destination?  I know that I am.  So many places to go – so many things to photograph.  I frequently get caught up in thinking about the exotic….. Bali, Egypt, New Zealand, Thailand.  For some reason it seems that the more far flung the locale, the more appeal it has.

In my never ending pursuit of the next best trip, I happened upon a helpful article in Frommer’s, the well known and respected publishers of travel guides.  They recently released their list of the Top Ten Destinations for 2012.    “Eureka,” I thought, surely they will provide an answer to my travel quest.  I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the list.  I’ll pass along the names of the places on their list, you can consult Frommer’s for more details.

1) Curacao (Caribbean island),    2)Chongquin China,    3) Fukuoka Japan,    4) Beirut,    5) Ghana,    6) London’s Greenwich neighborhood,    7) Girona Spain,   8) Bay of Fundy Nova Scotia, and    9) The Yucatan Peninsula.

Quite a list isn’t it?  Sort of get’s your blood pumping to think about the adventures and challenges trekking to such places.  BUT WAIT!  That is only nine destinations on their list of the TOP TEN.  What about the remaining great destination?

I didn’t believe my eyes!   Kansas City Missouri – right there on the top ten list.  That’s where I live!  ( Well, actually I live in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area as they say.  But still…………)   Here I have been traveling all over the world seeking great travel destinations and now they tell me I’m living in the center of a great one.

What led Frommer’s to include KC in the Top Ten?  They cite the following:  Cultural interests including the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the ballet, the symphony and the opera. World class museums include

The National World War I Museum and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Sports attractions include  The Negro Leagues Baseball Museumand the interactive College Basketball Experience at Sprint Center.  They round out their listing by noting Kansas City Barbecue as an art form in it’s own right.  They mention Arthur Bryant’s and Gates Barbecue.

Guess all of this just goes to show that sometimes there’s some really good stuff right in your own backyard.  I have resolved to look around me, pay attention, enjoy and appreciate the neat qualities and features of my hometown more, starting today. Might be something for you to consider as well. I’ll be sharing more of the outstanding features of my current hometown, Kansas City, in future articles.

As always……….Enjoy The Adventure!
