The Square Credit Card Service can be a niffty addition to your iPhone or iPad. With it you can accept a client’s credit card on site for payment for your photography services ( or any other type of payment as well ). It’s just really handy.
In the past I used one of those major credit card services affiliated with a national bank system. It required that I purchase or rent a card reader / data entry machine. ( I don’t like spending money needlessly.) And the machine was chained to my office desk by its electrical cord and the need for a land line to make a modem connection to the service.( I prefer to be free from my desk as much as possible. ) Then I heard about Square. This company provides credit card services via wireless connections ( cellular or WiFi ). With it you can take your credit card service with you – you can accept credit cards anywhere – art fairs, on shooting assignments, etc. Square provides you with a free little credit card scanning device which plugs into your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. The Square app for your device is also free. ( I really do like free.) Scan the credit card and you are done. You can also enter credit card information manually – a nice feature for people like me since I always seem to forget to bring along the Square card reader.
I have been using this Square service for several months now. I have to say it is great. The fees are reasonable – no worse than any other credit card services. The Square reader works great ( when you remember to bring it along – and did I mention it is free?) And the service is excellent You can print receipts if you have access to a printer or send receipts via email after charges are entered. You can download reports in Excel format. Funds are deposited quickly into your own bank account. There are also other ways you can “customize your inventory” which I haven’t even played with yet.
