I always advocate that travelers be security conscious. A traveler, especially a tourist, can be an easy target for criminals of all sorts. Enjoy your travels but be aware, alert, and prepared. I recently did an article on the advantages of preparing a “Go Kit” for travels (related article). I am a true believer in the idea of being prepared. But today I ran into a really interesting item for the Security Conscious Traveler which, at least for most of us, is perhaps a bit “over the top?” What do you think?
Item: Bulletproof Men’s Polo Shirt. Yes, I’m telling you it is for real. It’s made by Miguel Caballero, a company which apparently specializes in bulletproof clothing. It comes in four nice colors as well as “three levels of protection.” Option IIA: 9mm / 40 cal Smith and Wesson. Option II: 9mm / .357 Magnum / Mini Uzi submachine gun. And finally the top of the line Option IIIA: Uzi machine gun / MP5 submachine gun / 44 Magnum / and “stab-proof.” And here I thought that SPF 50 was maximum protection!
This is a no fooling, legit shirt “certified by the U.S. Department of Justice NIJ” according to their literature. The exterior is made of 100% cotton which overlays ultra-lightweight anti-ballistic removable panels. Alas, it is dry clean only so I guess you can’t wash it out along with your socks in your hotel sink overnight. They report that “high-profile clients include Steven Seagal, King Abdullah of Jordan ……and other notable V.I.P.’s.” Of course this level of protection doesn’t come cheap – cost is listed as $3,475.00 each. But then shipping is “Free” ( Have I ever mentioned that is one of my favorite words?)
