Zagg iPad Case Update –
Previously I reviewed a new keyboard / case combo that I obtained for use with my iPad (see article). At the time of writing that article I was about to head off for an adventure in China. I wanted a keyboard and protective iPad case to use on the journey.
I’ve now returned from China and thought it was time to update things as far as the Zagg iPad case is concerned. How did it handle my China Trek?
Overall I was very pleased with the Zagg Folio. Great battery life! I never recharged it in three weeks of use! Great protection. The keyboard was extremely workable for extended typing. Comfortable and easy to use.
With the Zagg in placeI felt comfortable tossing the iPad into my bag or backpack and heading out to explore. I had selected this particular iPad case because, unlike some other keyboards, it totally encloses the iPad – protecting both the screen and the back of the device. Some might say that it adds extra bulk to the iPad, and it does to a degree. But for my purposes the significant improvement in protection far outweighs the bulk issue which, in my opinion is relatively small.
Previously I had mentioned some concern that the iPad fit very tightly into the Zagg, making it quite difficulty to insert and remove. In fact I had used some sand paper to slightly expand the slide in groove on the Zagg so my ipad could be installed and removed from the Zagg more easily. After I talked with Customer Service at Zagg about this issue they graciously sent me a replacement. But quite honestly, the replacement folio was just as tight as my original. So I headed off to China with my sanded/modified folio in my kit. Fortunately, with time and use the snug fit has loosened up a bit. Now I have no difficulty inserting or removing the iPad as needed.
Another concern I had prior to my departure was with the fit of the “skin” on the Zagg Folio. In some places the “skin” didn’t fit precisely into the groove on the case edge. This resulted in the “skin” protruding ever so slightly. My concern was that, with time and use, these protruding edges might catch on something and so begin to peel away from the folio. This did indeed start to happen, but only in one small place, and only very slightly. Fortunately I noticed it immediately, before it could become a bigger problem. It was an easy fix – a bit of strong glue and the Zagg was good to go. Since then, no other difficulties.
So …… how did the Zagg Folio do? Am I satisfied? I think that from an overall point of view the Zagg did very, very well. Using it daily, in a variety of different situations and environments, the keyboard was great – making for a great typing experience. The case provides very good protection. My iPad looks like new, in spite of having logged many thousands of miles and lots of backpack and carry-on time. The fit is a slight issue – one which improved with use. The “skin” has held up really very well – although it did require one small glue down repair. I’d give the Zagg Folio an A- at this point (up slightly from the previous B). I comfortably recommend it to those wanting a great combination of nice keyboard and good protection.
