Here comes a great iPhone Incident Light Meter. It’s currently in Kickstarter phase but may be available soon.
Today’s cameras have most everything built in and they operate automatically. It’s really hard to find a digital camera which doesn’t have built in auto light metering. And for the most part these internal meters do a fairly good job. But most photographers understand that when you really want to get the exposure right, it pays to use an external light meter. And when it comes to external light meters – domed incident light meters are great. Internal light meters measure the amount of light Reflected Off Your Subject. Incident light meters measure the amount of light Falling On Your Subject. This makes them especially helpful for precise portrait or studio work. Domed light meters are helpful because they give a full 180 degree assessment of light generally resulting in more accurate readings than other incident meters without a dome which assess light from a more limited angle of view. There’s only one problem with most of these stand alone, external, domed incident light meters. They tend to be rather expensive, typically running into the $200 plus range. So – nice to have – but a tad bit expensive for a piece of gear that most of the time you can “get by without”.
Now Luxi has developed a neat-o clip on incident light meter dome for the iPhone. Think of it – an iPhone Incident Light Meter with dome! 180 degree incident light metering with your iPhone. Combine this with their free light meter app and – presto – you iPhone is now an incident light meter! The device is currently in Kickstarter phase but they are getting a good response. When produced, the anticipated cost will be around $25.00.
