 JOURNEY TO INDIA AND NEPAL

India map 1

India is a huge country.  For my first, introductory journey to India I decided to focus on the north central region – sometimes referred to as the Golden Triangle or Heart of India. Where will I go and what will I do?  Here are my current plans.

The black outline on the map above shows the area of my journey.  Below is a close up showing specific destinations.

India map 2

DELHI – My air route takes me from Kansas City, departing at 3:30 PM local, to Delhi via New York arriving in Delhi at 8:20 PM local the next day.  Total time, Kansas City to Delhi – 18.5 hours. Total distance – 8,416 miles (according the the airline) Jet Lag? Absolutely!

Delhi Highlights – Acclimatize to India (is that possible?) The rush and crush of India Experience. Raj Ghat (memorial area for Gandhi)  Jama Masjid Mosque, Chandni Chowk bazaar, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Qutab Minar, Red Fort, Baha’i House of Worship, and many more.

Jaipur – A visit to the Pink City

Jaipur Highlights – Palace of the Winds, Amber Fort, Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory park, Johari Bazaar, Jal Mahal, City Palace and of course others.

Ranthambore National Park – Some time away from the cities – in the wilds of India.

Ranthambore National Park Highlights –  Game viewing drives with the opportunity (hopefully) to see animals native to India in the wild – antelope, deer, mongoose, leopard, and the rare Bengal tiger (if I’m really lucky) . Also a visit to Ranthambore Fort.

Agra – A “must see” on anyone’s Journey to India

Agra Highlights – Top item – of course the Taj Mahal. Also Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb and the Moonlight Garden.

Varanasi – India’s oldest Hindu City on the Ganges, the City of Shiva.

Varanasi Highlights – An evening  boat ride on the Ganges watching the aarti sacred light ceremony, Ganges Ghats, Bharat Mata Temple. Journey to nearby Sarnath where Buddha preached his first “sermon” following his enlightenment in 530 BC at Dhamekh Stupa.

Nepal – My base for travel in Nepal will be Kathmandu.

Nepal Highlights – Boudhanath Stupa, the holies temple in Nepal. Khokana, Patan,Kathmandu Valley, Nagarkot. I’ll be staying at the Gokarna Forest Resort on the outskirts of Kathmandu.  It has it’s own golf course – but doubt I’ll take the time to tee it up. Still?

My Journey to India and Nepal  begins later this month.  Let the fun begin!
