ABOUT TIME TO HIT THE ROAD AGAIN!
My upcoming Journey To Myanmar has moved past the Anticipation Phase. Now about three months out from departure, it’s time to get a bit more serious and move into the Planning Phase of the journey. Here’s a look at one part of my plan.
Myanmar is a terribly interesting and diverse country. So much to do and see. One of my priority desires is to have an opportunity to spend some time with the Elephants of Myanmar.
Myanmar’s population of Asian elephants is second only to that found in India. Most elephants in Myanmar remain wild, roaming remote and sparsely populated regions of the country. For ages elephants have also been used in Myanmar for harvesting and hauling teak timber. Most “working elephants” live in government or privately owned timber camps where they earn their keep by moving large timbers out of the dense and rugged forest regions. Remote villages also may keep several elephants for various types of heavy-duty work. They provide transportation and carry goods, often being seen as the only viable option in mountainous forests.
Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp ( Green Hill Valley Website ), located near Kalaw Myanmar, was established to protect and preserve elephants as well as the local ecology and culture. Older timber elephants are “retired” here and live comfortably alongside younger elephants as well. The camp also has on-going re-plantation projects. Green Hill Valley provides locals and travelers alike with information and education about the region and about elephants and their welfare.
I am fortunate that I have been able to arrange to the meet the staff and photograph the Green Hill Valley program. I look forward to getting to know those who have founded and now maintain the camp and it’s services and to learning more about these magnificent animals – the Myanmar Elephant. I’ll be sharing more information as well as photos in the future so be sure to check back.
