The Psychology of Travel – Why Do You Travel?
Basically there are two general types of travel. First, there is Obligatory Travel. This type of travel is a necessity, something you must do. For example some people must travel for work while others travel to obtain medical care. That type of travel is obligatory. The second type of travel is Elective Travel. This is the type of travel you choose to do for your own reasons. And everyone, it seems, has their own reason for taking that elective travel journey.
Why Do You Travel? Why do you take that elective travel journey? As a psychologist I tend to think about things like this. After all, you’ve got to do something on those long international flights – right? At first I started to compile a list of reasons people might choose to travel. And I developed quite a list. But then I realized that this was really a list which was mostly comprised of my reasons for traveling. Beyond that I was just guessing. What I’m really curious about is, why do other people travel. What leads people to venture out of the comfort and known qualities of their home to explore other places?
So, again, being a psychologist, I thought I would do a bit of a study. Gather some data as they say. As a result, I am turning to you to ask the question …………
