Thomas Hart Benton Home – Kansas City
Kansas City has a number of “hidden gems” for the tourist and traveler. The home and studio of American Artist Thomas Hart Benton is one such gem.
Thomas Hart Benton (1889 – 1975), considered to be one of the most prominent American Painters, was born in Neosho, Missouri. After studying and working in Chicago, Paris, and New York he settled in Kansas City.
Benton, an accomplished painter, sculptor, lecturer and writer, is perhaps best known as a “muralist,” creating large format scenes depicting everyday people and life in the United States.
The Thomas Hart Benton home and studio are now a Missouri Historic Site and are open to the public. The property has been maintained as it was at the time of his death. A visit is a bit of a walk back in time.
The studio is very unimposing, dominated by the large window with the artist’s obligatory northern exposure. The space is full of the tools and materials Thomas used on a daily basis. It is clearly a work space, utilitarian and almost devoid of creature comforts.
A small version of “The Sources of Country Music” , the mural Benton was completing for the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee at the time of his death hangs on the studio wall.
