IRRAWADDY RIVER CRUISE

The Irrawaddy River flows southward through Myanmar (Burma). I always enjoy sampling different modes of transportation when I travel so I gladly took advantage of the opportunity to take an Irrawaddy River Cruise from Mandalay to Bagan.

Some photos from the river trip as I cruised from Mandalay to Bagan.
Parts of the riverfront are dotted with temples, cities and villages.
Much of the river is lined with farms and agriculture – most rather basic using wooden carts, hand labor, and oxen.
The cruise starts at dawn and it is a bit cool if you sit on the deck – as the sun rises so does the temperature of course and sitting on the deck is quite pleasant.
Passengers have the option of inside seating – airline type chairs. My cruise had few passengers and many on board chose to stretch out across several seats and catch a nap after the early morning departure.
There was a small snack bar on the upper deck.
Lunch was included as part of the fare. A typical Myanmar meal of noodles and veggies.
The Irrawaddy is a working river – there is lots of commercial traffic.
It’s a leisurely 10 hour journey from Mandalay to Bagan. It’s a very relaxing cruise and a chance to see Burmese life and culture along the river.
The Irrawaddy River Cruise arrives in Bagan in the evening – just in time to settle in at your hotel and enjoy an evening meal in the ancient city.
My Recommendation – Take The Boat! ……….. And Enjoy The Journey!
