MAGNIFICENT LIGHTHOUSES OF

COASTAL MAINE

A road trip along the coast of Maine is delightful in many ways.  Wandering through the cities, large and small, along Route 1 (See related Route 1 Article), travelers discover unique shopping, delicious food, friendly people, grand vistas, and of course – some wonderful lighthouses.

Lighthouses are unique and special structures on our coastal landscape.  Simultaneously functional and architecturally striking, they stand their solitary watch – providing safe passage to mariners and offering a visual treat to visitors.

Quoddy Head Lighthouse

The West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, located near Lubec, Maine, was built in 1808. It is a classic lighthouse with tower, light, and residence. Today it is fully automated and no light keeper is in residence.  The residence building does house a visitor center and park rangers occasionally reside in a second floor apartment area.  Quoddy Head Light  has the distinction of being the Easternmost Point in the United States.

Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse

The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is located near Bar Harbor, Maine and is within Acadia National Park.  It marks the entrance to Bass Harbor near the Village of Bass Harbor in the Municipality of Tremont, Maine. The best views of the lighthouse require scrambling down the rocky and jumbled Maine shoreline.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse

The Pemaquid Point Lighthouse was commissioned in 1827. It is located near the town of Bristol, Maine. As with many lighthouses, the best views come from the seaside, requiring a boat or a scramble down to the rocky shoreline.

Portland Head Lighthouse

Portland, Maine has several lighthouses located nearby.  The Portland Head Lighthouse is the best known, the most photographed, and is considered by many to be the most beautiful. Construction began at the urging of George Washington in 1787. Completed in 1791, it is the oldest lighthouse in the State of Maine.
