Basketball Hall of Fame
Springfield, Massachusetts
Welcome to the Basketball Hall of Fame! The longer and more official name is – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. If you like basketball – this is a place you are really going to enjoy. The original hall opened in 1968, with the current hall opening in 2002. The location in Springfield, Massachusetts ties in with the hall’s namesake, Dr. James Naismith, who invented the game of basketball in 1891 while he was teaching at the YMCA Training School in Springfield Massachusetts.
True lovers of the game of basketball will know that after completing his medical degree, Dr. Naismith moved to Lawrence, Kansas to join the faculty and serve as their first basketball coach. That was the start of KU’s storied history as a basketball powerhouse – the first KU coach invented the game! Today, Dr. Naismith’s original hand written basketball rules are housed on the KU campus.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame pays homage to the history of the game as well as basketball in all it’s variety – collegiate & professional, men’s & women’s, players & teams, coaches & commentators.
Each visitor will find their own way to explore the history and exhibits on display. As a graduate of Michigan State University and then The University of Kansas and I followed related themes through the hall.
