ADVENTURE ON THE SUNDAY NIGHT WALKING STREET – CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
Where It Is And What You’ll Find

Sunday Night In Chaing Mai is special. It’s a night of transformation. During the day Rachadamnoen Road, a main street which runs between Tha Phae Gate and Wat Phra Singh temple in Chiang Mai’s old city, is a typical Chiang Mai street. It’s lined with shops and restaurants and the roadway is full of autos, tuk tuk and songthru traffic – all belching smoke and adding to the not insignificant pollution issues of the area. But starting around 4:00 PM on Sunday afternoon the transformation begins. Rachadamnoen Road essentially disappears. The street is closed to vehicle traffic and hundreds of venders start erecting their mobile shops, stalls and stands in the street as well as many intersecting side streets. Visually descriptive international signage appears in the street. Crowds build quickly as the evening approaches. By 5:00 PM thousands are already wandering and shopping along Rachadamnoen Road.

At 6:00 PM loudspeakers along Rachadamnoen Road play the Thai National Anthem. All the thousands of walkers, shoppers, and venders stop and there is respectful silence along the entire street – (NFL Players could perhaps take note?). With the conclusion of the anthem the action really beings. The transformation of Rachadamnoen Road is complete. Sunday Night Walking Street has officially begun.
