The RED TAIL SQUADRON , a component of the Commemorative Air Force, honors and keeps alive the remarkable history of The Tuskegee Airmen. The Airmen were America’s first black military pilots and their support personnel. Overcoming significant obstacles of the times, they persevered, trained and served with bravery, valor and distinction in World War II.

The Tuskegee Airmen served in Europe, flying fighter protection and escort for Allied Bombers. The planes in their squadron were easily identified by their distinctive paint scheme – the Red Tail on their P-51 single engine fighters.

The Red Tail Squadron brought their beautifully restored Red Tail P-51C to the KC Airshow in July. It was a featured star of the show. performing as the opening flight on each of the two days of the event.

The Red Tail P-51C was piloted by the Red Tail Squadron leader, Doug Rozendaal at the KC Air Show. ( He was kind enough to pose wearing the old style helmet and goggles shown below. For his actual fligtst he wore more up-to-date gear)

The Red Tail Squadron also brought their traveling exhibit – “Rise Above” – to the KC Airshow. The exhibit features a 160 degree panoramic screen showing the film, “Rise Above,” an emotional and dramatic documentary presenting the history and accomplishments of the brave Tuskegee Airmen. The film also documents The Red Tail Squadron’s work to preserve and present the story of The Tuskegee Airmen as well as the P-51C.

The weather in Kansas City was a wee bit warm for the Air Show – well, Okay – it was HOT!. The Red Tail Squadron helped out visitors who were looking for a bit of relief from the heat. The Rise Above Exhibit is air-conditioned which helped make the exhibit a fan favorite. Even the Red Tail P-51C helped out – providing much needed shade for some lucky air show patrons.

Visitors to the KC Air Show loved the Rise Above exhibit and the Red Tail Squadron’s P-51C. It was a favorite backdrop for some great “selfies!”

The CAF Red Tail Squadron and their Rise Above: Red Tail outreach program are wonderful organizations, keeping alive the History of The Tuskegee Airmen. The KC Air Show was fortunate to have them as featured participants. If you visited their exhibit and watched their Red Tail P-51C perform then you know what I mean. If you missed them – hopefully you will catch them the next time they are in your area.
